Whole-Grain Flour Swap

Our whole grain gluten free flour substitute. A nutritious blend of gluten-free whole grains, seeds and fiber which creates a balanced, earthy flavor profile to delight the palate and satisfy the body.

The key ingredient that puts the “detox” in our Detox Dessert products. A tasteless, pure soluble fiber that swells to form a gelatinous mass when it comes in contact with water. It has a gentle cleansing effect by removing and transporting waste through the intestinal tract. The bulking effect helps you feel full, tells your brain to stop eating, and reduces cravings.  Studies show it supports healthy cholesterol levels and cardiovascular function.  It also promotes healthy bowel function and regularity by both bulking up the stool and absorbing excess fluid which helps prevent constipation AND diarrhea.  Whole Psyllium Husk is a nifty ingredient in our Flour Swap because it holds all the ingredients together (like eggs and the gluten component in wheat) while still allowing for lifting in cakes and baked goods. Everyone’s heard of “Metamucil”, an over-the-counter psyllium-based fiber supplement.  But I ask you this important question…”would you rather pinch your nose and swallow a spoonful of Metamucil or would you rather indulge in a Detox Dessert?”. 

Among the healthiest grain on earth. Oats have an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effect on the entire system. They also pack a powerful punch of protein, fiber and micronutrients. They are loaded with a soluble fiber called “beta-glucan” that reduces total cholesterol and LDL (bad) cholesterol, and increases the sensation of fullness, while feeding the healthy bacteria in your gut. The beta-glucan also reduces blood sugar and insulin response by forming a thick gel that delays stomach emptying. This characteristic aids in weight loss by making us feel full while slowing down glucose absorption into the bloodstream. Oats are also notable for an antioxidant called “avenanthromides” which have been shown to help lower blood pressure by increasing nitric oxide, the chemical messenger that causes the blood vessels to relax and dilate.  The bran in whole oats relieves constipation and is both gentle and calming to the gastrointestinal system. Oats are naturally gluten-free and have a delicate, neutral flavor that can be safely enjoyed by most people.

Our organic coconut flour is simply made from coconut flesh which is dried, then finely ground into a powder. It’s very high in fiber and moderately high in protein which regulates the appetite and can promote weight loss. Coconut flour is very low in carbohydrates which has a stabilizing effect on blood sugar and insulin levels. When baked in with other ingredients, coconut flour reduces the overall glycemic index of the food.  Studies show it can lower cholesterol and blood sugar levels, reducing the risk of developing heart disease. Its remarkable health benefits and naturally sweet flavor are the reasons we’ve made it the dominant flour of the Grain-Free Flour Swap.

Our almond flour is made by blanching california-grown raw almonds, then grinding them into a fine powder.  The blanching process decreases phytic acid levels which is important to allow for more nutrients from the nuts to absorb into the body.  It’s incredibly nutritious and loaded with antioxidants like vitamin E that prevent damage from free radicals which accelerate aging and increase risk for heart disease and cancer.  Nuts promote metabolic balance because they contain a healthy combination of protein, unsaturated fat and fiber to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels.  Magnesium is abundant in almonds which is important because it’s a common deficiency in our population.  Deficiency of magnesium can lead to elevated blood pressure and increase risk for diabetes. Almond flour has a light nutty, sweet flavor and inserts a wonderful rustic density to the Grain-Free Flour Swap.

Sugar Swap

Our granulated sugar substitute for baking. A proprietary blend of 4 natural sweeteners, a symphony of sweetness without the carbs, calories or unpleasant aftertaste. Inulin rounds out the formula to increase satiety and is our sneaky way of feeding healthy gut bacteria.

Erythritol is a sugar alcohol that carries 70% of the sweetness of sugar.  It occurs naturally in many fruits and vegetables.  It’s made from a simple fermentation process that uses a microorganism (usually yeast) to convert glucose (a sugar molecule) into a slightly different, sweet tasting molecule that the body cannot use as energy.  This conversion  process renders it a zero-carb, zero-calorie sweetener.  It’s an excellent sugar replacement for people with diabetes or metabolic syndrome because it doesn’t raise insulin or blood sugar levels.  A small human study showed taking erythritol daily actually improved functioning of blood vessels, reducing heart disease risk.  Animal studies show it works as an antioxidant, preventing the damage to blood vessels caused by elevated blood sugar in diabetics.  Like Xylitol, it inhibits bacterial growth in the mouth, making it beneficial for oral health.

An organic sugar alcohol that looks and tastes just like sugar but has negligible effects on blood sugar and insulin levels. It’s naturally made from Birch Trees and is even produced in small quantities in our bodies from normal metabolism. It carries a very low glycemic index of about 7 (vs. table sugar at 60-70). What’s most exciting about Xylitol is the positive effects it has throughout the body. It’s great for dental health because it prevents tooth decay by killing harmful bacteria and feeding beneficial bacteria in the mouth. The antibacterial effects of xylitol also reduce ear infections in children prone to them (remember, ears, nose and throat are all connected). Xylitol also prevents yeast buildup in the mouth, commonly called “thrush .” It increases calcium absorption in the gut, which has a bone-strengthening and collagen-building effect. Interestingly, animal studies showed consumption of xylitol was beneficial in preventing obesity and diabetes in animals fed a fattening diet.

*Be advised that any sugar alcohol can pull water into the intestines and cause bloating in sensitive people. Typically the body adjusts quickly and any bloating or loose stools self-resolves. The Sugar Swap has been designed in a very specific way to minimize and eliminate the common GI side effects of sugar alcohols.  We’ve gone out of our way to make it improve gut health by adding inulin to feed beneficial intestinal bacteria and increase nutrient absorption.  

Please be aware that animals have a very different reaction to xylitol, it can cause severe hypoglycemia, so please don’t let your furry friends eat anything made with this ingredient.

An organic, sweet extract from a plant leaf called stevia rebaudiana. It has no effect on blood sugar or insulin levels, can reduce cholesterol and has even been shown to inhibit cancer cell growth (although more studies are needed). It can be tricky to use as a sugar replacement on its own because it carries a strong licorice, bitter taste. The amount of Stevia in the Sugar Swap is masterfully blended to give that extra kick of sweetness without even knowing it’s there.

Healthy amounts of beneficial gut bacteria increase our immune system and prevent infections. Inulin is a key component of the Sweet Sugar Swap because it slows digestion, helps create the sensation of fullness, and increases the absorption of vitamins and minerals while reducing cholesterol absorption. Slowed digestion allows for sustained blood sugar levels, which improve energy, focus and mood.

Egg Swap

Our egg substitute for baking. Creamy almond protein which fuels the muscles, inulin which feeds the beneficial gut bacteria and turmeric which can reduce inflammation and is used for color. Finished with a touch of sweetness from the stevia leaf and organic, natural flavor to enhance your treats.

A dense source of complete protein and fiber created by pressing the natural oils out of almonds. The high protein content is essential to keep macronutrients balanced in all Detox Desserts, stabilizing blood sugar and promoting satiety. It's silky texture and neutral flavor make it a perfect base for the Sweet Egg Swap.

The main active ingredient in turmeric. It has powerful anti-inflammatory effects and is a potent antioxidant that can neutralize free radicals. Curcumin absorbs best with fat, so we chose almond protein that contains healthy fat as the delivery system.

Butter Swap

Our substitute for butter in baking. A base of California-grown blanched almonds whipped with cold-pressed extra-virgin olive oil to make it smooth and creamy. Finished with a hint of organic, natural flavor extracts and Himalayan salt, it tastes and bakes like real butter but with superior health benefits.

Almonds are incredibly nutritious and loaded with antioxidants like vitamin E that prevents damage from free radicals, accelerates aging, and increases risk for heart disease and cancer. They have less phytic acid levels, allowing more nutrients from food to absorb into the body. Almond butter is nutritionally superior to regular butter because it perfectly balances protein, healthy fat and fiber to regulate blood sugar and insulin levels without cholesterol. Made from cold-pressed olives. It is the healthiest type of olive oil because it is the least processed. EVOO has been studied extensively for its many health benefits and has been shown to protect against heart disease and reduce inflammation. The oil’s primary antioxidants are oleocanthal and oleuropein, which reduce inflammation and protect LDL (bad) cholesterol from oxidation, preventing plaque from building up on the walls of blood vessels. Olive oil improves blood vessel health and prevents unwanted blood clotting. Studies have found that regular consumption of olive oil may be linked to lower levels of inflammatory markers including CRP and interleukin-6.
